Lawn Repair One Month On - Update

Published on 8 October 2026 at 13:00

So this is not the most interesting post I have ever done. However it does show progress that might be expected in optimal conditions - the last week or so has been a couple of days of rain with sunny days and warm nights in between.

The bottom photograph shows the lawn after ultra short mowing, scarifying, over-seeding and top dressing on Monday 7th September, the next photo up shows the lawn after 13 hours of rain on Tuesday 8th September and the next one up shows the beginnings of growth, Wednesday 16th September.

The compost has all been absorbed into the ground and the grass seed has germinated all over. We used three types of seed and the shade-tolerant seed (which you can't really see, as it's at the bottom around the apple tree, is way ahead with almost complete coverage already).

Subsequently there's one from around 25th September where the lack of rain in September and some very stubborn patches of thatch mean we're not going as quickly as hoped.

TIP - So get out the drill! Get your biggest masonry drill bit and go for it every couple of inches along the hard thatch patches. Great exercise but make sure to clean the drill properly afterwards.

Almost there! 7th October. There has been a bit more rain and thanks to the drilling it is actually getting to the roots and not sitting on the surface feeding the weeds.
